Togspace - Detox feature
Hello, I’m Matt. During the week I am a graphic designer but come the weekend I enjoy nothing more than disconnecting from the internet, computers, tv or phone and getting out and enjoying the great outdoors.
All of my life I have been involved with Scouts or Duke of Edinburgh award which accounts for some twenty plus years, ten years of which I’ve spent as an outdoors/expedition leader for both. Combining my love of the outdoors and being introduced to photography from a young age the two have naturally overlapped and now I spend the weekends or whenever I can get away outdoors, in the mountains or coast photographing my everyday adventures. There is nothing more rewarding after a hard week on a computer and waking up on a mountain side with the sunrising over the landscape as you peer through the tent doors. Add a hot brew in your hand and some good friends to the mix it’s hard to leave and return to work some weekends.
Last year I worked with Kozu Books to bring my many years of expeditions, trips and photography in a book that took you on a journey much like I would with the expeditions.
Titled ‘Detox’ as with these trips, more often than not we have no phone network, no internet and limited resources, all of which we have to carry. Getting off the grid for multiple days is an interesting challenge and when you are required to carry all your belongings on your back, you really appreciate what you do and don’t need. Restricting what you bring and not having the ability to charge most electronics and being in some extremely remote areas with lack of most basic means, let alone internet is an alien world.
As an outdoors leader we end up working in a variety of conditions and enduring the elements no matter what and with any landscape/outdoor photographer, the weather plays a big part in telling the story and my book is no different, enduring rain, snow and heatwaves throughout the journey to take you from the mountain summits to the coast.
Today, I know longer work as an outdoors leader teaching with Scouts or Duke of Edinburgh. Instead I spend my time as with friends and myself on similar trips but with more premise on photography. Much like the expeditions in the past, the theme ‘Detox’ is still prevalent on these trips as we still continue to visit locations with limited signal and wild camping again in any conditions. Call us mad or silly we will continue to venture out as we enjoy getting off the grid and witnessing the clear skies at night, stars, meteors, sunrise and sunset under our tents.
