Photography camping workshops

Are you looking to build your confidence in these mountainous regions? Would you like to wake up to the sun rising in the mountains or watch the stars in a dark sky park? Returning home with a different and unique shots from a packed weekend in a National Park.

If so then my new Wild camping photography workshops is the weekend trip for you. I offer wild camping workshops across Wales – Snowdonia, Cambrian Mountains (Elan Valley), Brecon Beacons and the one exception to the wild camping is Pembrokeshire but this will be camping still. These workshops are tailored to you and are 1-2-1 workshops or small groups but ultimately, we will plan a trip around your ambitions and abilities to get you the best experience possible.

 Touring the Brecon Beacons

You’re in safe hands. If you haven’t already read, I was an Outdoors/Expedition leader for the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Scouts, a holder of the DofE awards including the Gold award and a Scouts leader for over 10 years, holding the highest awards and formal training within the organisation. Furthermore, I am a trainee mountain leader and have climbed more mountains than I care to count and continue to work with MyOutdoors in testing and reviewing outdoor equipment and clothing and brand ambassador for Snugpak and Vanguard Photo UK.

To put it simply you’re in safe hands and I go out in these locations no matter the weather, but I don’t expect you to do the same.

My three expeditions in the Cambrian Mountains for my Duke of Edinburgh Gold and Queen Scouts Awards held and run by Expedition Wales.
 Touring the Brecon Beacons

The workshop generally starts on a Friday evening and starts with heading up a hill or mountain in plenty of time for sunset and pitching in the light. If time allows, in some parks we will shoot some additional spots on route up. Later in to the night if weather permits, we will continue shooting and building on astro photography. I cannot promise this for every trip and is completely dependent on conditions. The next morning, we will be up bright and early to catch the sunrise before heading back down for breakfast. During the day we will visit lower level locations. For example: Brecon Beacons – Waterfall country / Snowdonia – various slate quarries or heading to the coasts.

My workshops aren’t just for sunset and sunrise we will cover a wide range of conditions, but it is useful to already have a bit of camera knowledge and of course you must have an interest in camping as our time we will be spent in the outdoors. We will not only look at photography techniques but how-to wild camp, the etiquette that comes with wild camping as well as navigation, equipment and tips for these regions and of course various locations across the National Parks.

These workshops can be run year-round providing wintery conditions are not present. Before setting off we will assess the weather to ensure a safe weekend for you. In addition, you will get a list of locations which suit the weather conditions for that weekend to ensure you get the most out of your trip. We will look at what kit is needed prior to the trip but please check with me first so we can determine whether it is suitable for the conditions.

When booking please have several dates available in case of weather conditions not suited to what you hope to achieve.

Prices are just £180 for the Brecon Beacons, Elan Valley and Pembrokeshire* and £250 for Snowdonia with a £50 deposit on booking. Please use the contact form below to get in touch to begin discussing your trip. For every booking I will be donating 10% of the total booking to the BMC Mend Our Mountains and supporting the National Parks.

My workshops are very active and will involve climbing one or several mountains and being on your feet most of the day, so a good fitness level is needed. Prior to any trip away we will discuss equipment and what you will need to bring and what is best for the conditions. Please do not worry, I will not be sending you out to purchase lots of new equipment as I have spare tents, bags and jackets available to rent for the weekend.

*Pembrokeshire is the only base camp workshop and we will not be wild camping in this area, we will be using a local campsite which offers us great access to the surrounding beaches and locations.

If you are interested in more coastal photography, then Pembrokeshire is the better location however Snowdonia and Brecon Beacons both offer great spots for coastal shots with Anglesey and the Gower, both of which in Summer months you can get the chance to see the Bioluminescent plankton.
