Remember these workshops are tailored towards you and exploring the location. If you need something specific or a certain location or learn something specific within photography, then please include these details in the form and we can discuss them prior to and during the workshop. If not I will tailor the workshop around your experience and physical requirements to ensure you get the most of the experience.
By booking me for a photography workshop you will be in the safe hands of award winning and qualified outdoors photographer and leader, with the last ten years teaching as an Outdoors leader in Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh award. This extensive knowledge and time in the outdoors means you will have a tutor with knowledge of the areas, equipment and training, helping us to get the best out of the weather and locations.
My workshops are tailored around exploring Wales. I have visited the country every year of my life, spending much of my time in the mountains of Snowdonia or coasts of Pembrokeshire and all the regions in between. My workshops are over multiple days to make the most of the time and give us the best opportunity to explore the areas. In addition to Wales my workshops cover the South of England from central London to Durdle door and Dartmoor.
Throughout the day, we will explore numerous locations covering a range of skills and techniques from long exposure to astro photography and get the opportunity to visit Snowdonia’s slate quarries or Pembrokeshires numerous beaches and coves with the aim of giving you the best experience. I run these workshops at weekends only. Workshops can be arranged to run during the week but I will need prior notice of your timings.
On all workshops we will look at subjects such as composition, camera technique, working with light and poor weather, use of filters, exposure blending (HDR) and focusing. Wild camping photography workshops will explore camping, locations and etiquette to wild camping and how to be safe. I run my workshops in both Southern England and across Wales. For the day you will have my full undivided attention where we will visit some of the best places and classics the areas have to offer.
You’re in safe hands. I am an outdoors and expedition leader for the Duke of Edinburgh award and Scouts, a holder of DofE awards including the Gold award and a Scouts leader for over 10 years as well as several awards, formal training and qualifications in the outdoors I work with outdoors adventure travel, news and reviews brand, MyOutdoors in testing and reviewing outdoor equipment. Furthermore, I am a brand ambassador for Snugpak and Vanguard Photo UK and a UK Champion for Kase Filters UK.
To put it simply, you’re in safe hands and although I go out no matter the weather, I don’t expect you to do the same so please keep several dates available in case we need to re-arrange due to poor conditions.
Maybe you’re not looking for a workshop and all you need is new areas to explore but unsure where to go? You also don’t want to pay hundreds of pounds then my Location guide is what you are looking for.
Unlike workshops, the location guides won’t bring any teaching elements in to the trip. Instead, Matt will act a guide for you and take you to numerous locations over a weekend depending on the theme you wish to capture. Whether this be slate quarries or up high on mountain tops. This is aimed at those who already have an understanding of photography, walking and even camping.
Prices for a guided location for the day is £50 per day /person. This doesn’t include food or transport. I am just a guide. If you require further tuition, please consider my 1-2-1 or wild camping workshops.
Would you like to learn how to make water smooth and silky? Not sure where to start with long exposures or which filters or tripods to use?

Are you looking to build your confidence in these mountainous regions? Would you like to wake up to the sun rising in the mountains or watch the stars in a dark sky park? Returning home with a different and unique shots from a packed weekend in a National Park.
If so then my new Wild camping photography workshops is the weekend trip for you. I offer wild camping workshops across Wales – Snowdonia, Cambrian Mountains (Elan Valley), Brecon Beacons and the one exception to the wild camping is Pembrokeshire but this will be camping still. These workshops are tailored to you and are 1-2-1 workshops or small groups but ultimately, we will plan a trip around your ambitions and abilities to get you the best experience possible.
I do things a little differently, rather than set dates where you sign up. We work together to tailor the ideal workshop weekend away for you. Not date restrictions or locations. I have found this gives both myself and you, the client the most flexibility and ease. When booking please have several dates available in case of weather conditions not suited to what you hope to achieve.
The workshop generally starts on a Friday evening and starts with heading up a hill or mountain in plenty of time for sunset and pitching in the light. If time allows, in some parks we will shoot some additional spots on route up. Later in to the night if weather permits, we will continue shooting and building on astro photography. I cannot promise this for every trip and is completely dependent on conditions. The next morning, we will be up bright and early to catch the sunrise before heading back down for breakfast. During the day we will visit lower level locations. For example: Brecon Beacons – Waterfall country / Snowdonia – various slate quarries or heading to the coasts.
My workshops aren’t just for sunset and sunrise we will cover a wide range of conditions, but it is useful to already have a bit of camera knowledge and of course you must have an interest in camping as our time we will be spent in the outdoors. We will not only look at photography techniques but how-to wild camp, the etiquette that comes with wild camping as well as navigation, equipment and tips for these regions and of course various locations across the National Parks.
These workshops can be run year-round providing wintery conditions are not present. Before setting off we will assess the weather to ensure a safe weekend for you. In addition, you will get a list of locations which suit the weather conditions for that weekend to ensure you get the most out of your trip. We will look at what kit is needed prior to the trip but please check with me first so we can determine whether it is suitable for the conditions.
£200.00 for Brecon Beacons
£200.00 for Elan Valley
£220.00 for Pembrokeshire*
£250 for Snowdonia
with a £50 deposit on booking on all locations. Please use the contact form below to get in touch to begin discussing your trip.
*Pembrokeshire is the only base camp workshop and we will not be wild camping in this area, we will be using a local campsite which offers us great access to the surrounding beaches and locations. This is due to local restrictions and safety due to MOD training area at Castlemartin. When booking I will make your campsite book for you.
If you are interested in coastal photography Pembrokeshire is the better location, however Snowdonia and Brecon Beacons both offer great locations for coastal experiences with Anglesey and the Gower, both of which in Summer months giving us the opportunity to see the Bioluminescent plankton.
My workshops are very active and will involve climbing one or several mountains and being on your feet most of the day, so a good fitness level is needed. Prior to any trip away we will discuss equipment and what you will need to bring and what is best for the conditions. Please do not worry, I will not be sending you out to purchase lots of new equipment as I have spare tents, bags and jackets available to rent for the weekend.
The link below is a kit list of items we recommend to DofE and Scout groups for expeditions and trips. Although subjective it gives you a guide of what you may need.
By completing the form above you are giving me permission to contact you for the purpose of arranging the workshop only. No records are kept on file or used for marketing purposes.
